What does high Google ranking mean?

The expression high Google ranking is something you hear quite often. The higher you rank in Google, the higher up on the list of results your content will be. This means that if you have the highest ranking for the phrase “high Google ranking“, your website will show up first when someone searches for “high Google ranking” in Google.

No one really knows exactly how Google’s algorithms work, i.e. how they decide who will rank higher than others. These algorithms are also altered all the time, so as to avoid exploitation of the system. Google wants to be the best search engine, and that people through their searches will get the most relevant pages listed. This is why it’s so important for them to have a good algorithm which it would be difficult to manipulate.

How to get high Google ranking?

There are several factors that are important in relation to this. As you may have noticed, I’ve already written high Google ranking several times in this text. This is important if I want Google to understand that this article is about high Google ranking. It’s also important that the search word or phrase that you would like a high rank for comes early in the text. It is however also important to be careful about this. If a search word or phrase appears too often (i.e. the percentage is unnaturally high in relation to the total amount of the words in the text), Google will find it suspicious and the page/article will be penalised for this accordingly.

HEADLINE (H1)

Another important tool is the headline H1. I’ve used this above, and I also made sure that this contains the phrase that I would like high ranking for, high Google ranking. You should only use one H1 headline in a text. If you use several, you will only confuse the search engine. Google has stated that headline H1 describes the most important subject of an article/a page. H2 headlines are therefore considered secondary, and will help Google establish the logic of the content. In this article, I therefore use H2 headlines as sub-headlines for content of secondary importance.

TITLE TAG

This should’ve come as point number 1, simply because it is the most important point on our check-list. Google seems to give a lot of weight to your title tag, i.e. the title of your page. This is the text which you will find between the HTML <TITLE> tags in the <HEAD> section of your website. This text should hence include something which is very relevant for your website. I, for instance, have the following text: «English to Norwegian translation – Anderssen Language Services». This is exactly what this website first and foremost is about; English to Norwegian translation.

RELEVANT SEARCH WORDS/PHRASES

We have already mentioned this in relation to the search phrase high Google ranking above (see how I managed to put the search phrase into the text one more time there?). The problem with this is that it might be a bit difficult to mention the search phrase as many times as you need without the text becoming unnatural and difficult to read. We do want out visitors to enjoy reading our content, and if this is packed with a specific search phrase left, right and centre, it might become less than enjoyable to read the actual text. Your website does however need to contain the relevant search words/phrases, i.e. the search words you believe people might search for and want to come to your website. If you sell real estate, and believe that “apartments for sale” could be a relevant search phrase, then this needs to appear on the website in order for your website to get high Google ranking for this phrase.

QUALITY OF CONTENT

Google doesn’t actually just look at the content of a page, but it also looks at the content and compares it to other pages which deal with the same subject. If your content is considered of higher quality than the others, then it’s likely that you will rank higher than them in the long run. It’s hence important to publish new and exciting material which Google will believe is very relevant for the search phrase. Note: If you copy content from other pages you will be penalised accordingly.

LINK BUILDING

Link building is another important factor to consider. Link building means that you build up the amount of websites which actually link to your website. If the website linking to yours is of high quality, then your page will receive a higher rank from this link. Put somewhat extremely, you will hence get a higher ranking if CNN links to your site than if a website which sells toys for adults does. Everything needs to be done in moderation, though, and the same applies here. If an, according to Google, unnatural amount of sites suddenly link to your website, Google will think something less than honest may have taken place, and you will be penalised. For this reason it is important to build your links slowly and over time.

LINKS WHICH CONTAIN SEARCH WORDS/PHRASES

Let’s assume that this website, www.alanguageservices.com, is about apartments for sale. If a site is linking to my website, and the text of the link is “apartments for sale”, it will be clearer for Google that this website is important in relation to this specific search phrase, than if the text of the link simply is “Anderssen Language Services”.

INTERNAL LINKING

Internal linking refers to linking from one page to another throughout your own website. There are different views on how effective this is, seeing that some people have noticed better ranking by doing this, whereas others have noticed the oppposite. Internal linking does however show that there is logic on your website, and I would recommend doing it.

SITEMAP

It’s important to create a sitemap which is specifically designed for search engines. This doesn’t guarantee that Google will index and list all your pages, but it definitely won’t cause any damage. It will help Google understand how your site is build up. This is especially important if design elements on your website previously made it difficult for Google to discover your website.

ALT TAGS ON IMAGES

This is the alternative text of an image, and the text which explains what your image is about. This is something which is necessary for software for the blind, and since Google is technically blind as well, these ALT tags are given a lot of weight. ALT tags should consist of good keywords that are relevant to the rest of the content. I have, for instance, set the ALT tag of the image in this article as high Google ranking.

PUBLISH NEW AND RELEVANT ARTICLES OFTEN

By doing this, you will make Google think that this website is very interesting, and that it is frequently updated. For Google, this indicates that readers will get access to new, original and relevant information through your website. This is important to achieve high Google ranking!
